2020 NEW! Nebbiolo / Refosco
The sixth release of NEW! Red. I think the 2020 vintage is the most delicious and highest quality release yet.
In the glass
So much fruit here! 2020' rules. Juicy blackberry and strawberry sit either side of super juby raspberry aromas, picture some curb side rosemary and that lovely rusty red Colbinabbin spice on top. Actually smells like tar and wisteria.
Nimble wine on the palate. Lovely zingy acid and young tannin push forward initially, with dark purple fruit folding across the palate - woody tannin just behind. Salivating finish screams for fat and salt - or another sip.
Nebbiolo and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso from Willoughby Bridge and Chalmers vineyards respectively.
These sites sit either side of Heathcote-Rochester Rd just north of the town of Colbinabbin.
Willoughby bridge vineyard is planted in N/S rows and sits down towards the plains where as Charlmers’ vines are planted E/W (lesser sun exposure) higher up on the hill with more intensely red soils.
The pressings from early Nebbiolo rosé picks, full of phenolic and flavour are fermented in barrique while later harvested, destemmed Nebbiolo and Refosco are fermented separately in stainless.
Each pick bringing different elements to the assemblage, blended to make a delicious and balanced wine of place.
Assembled late May to stainless and racked a couple of times before bottling. Less than 0.04 g/l total sulphur.
NEW! benefits from the beautiful freshness of the vintage (near perfect flavour ripeness) and the method of blending early and late picks together has allowed a phenolically ripe and satisfying wine to land spot on 13.5% with beautiful acidity and balance of flavours.
